Vision of Victory

Dreaming Out Loud

Rick, Foreman for a construction company in The Dalles, OR, told Session 1 of Turbo's Performance Team Lab (PTL):

"After our session on Vision and Mission, Larry challenged us to discuss our Mission and Vision with our department, crew, and family. I decided to take a slightly modified approach to discuss our 2016 "16" with my boys one at a time. We discussed, family, friends, work, the future of each family member and what the boys saw as their 'job' as a family member.

"One of my boys is 16. After he saw that I was sincerely interested, ready to listen without doubt or pessimism, he began to tell me about his 5-year plan. He wants to become a Physician's Assistant (PA). Then his 10-year plan. After being a PA for a while, three years or so, he will be able to decide what medical specialty he would like to pursue. Then he plans to go back to school and pursue whatever special training is required for that specialty. I was impressed with the details of his plan and proud of his focus and drive. I left that discussion feeling very proud of my children and the honor of being involved with their lives.

"The lesson I learned from this experience is how important it is to create a safe place for my boys to dream out loud, to verbalize their 'vision of victory' and I learned that my boys are awesome! They are so in tune to their own future and that of our family. There is so much more to each of them than meets the eye. Taking the time with each one individually allowed me to see what great young men they are growing into.

"The action I call you to take is to create a safe place for your kids to dream out loud, talk to your kids about their futures and your family's core values.

"The benefit you will gain is the peace that comes from knowing that as your kids pull away, you are still able to be a true parent and you'll gain insight into the wisdom of youth through the eyes of your children."

When you have one on one time with your kids, here are some questions you could lead off with:

What are you plans and goals for the school year?
Where do you think you want your career to take you?
What career choices are you considering?
What part of your preparation are you most looking forward to?
What part of your preparation do you expect will be most challenging?
What is your next step?
How can I support you on your path?

By following Rick's lead, you will have the intimacy we all deserve with our children.
